If Karl Schroeder's first novel, Ventus, borrowed a few ideas from Vernor Vinge and used them to explore a nanotech world and the philosophy behind it, then Permanence mixes a bit of C.J. Cherryh and a bit of Jack McDevitt (think Merchanter's Luck meets Infinity Beach) and takes on no less an issue than humanity's place in the universe. But the story is told with such style and panache that it never reads like a dry philosophical discussion; there's too much excitement for that.

The book starts with young Rue Cassels's escape from her domineering brother and run-down space station. Her journey takes her to planets orbiting brown dwarf stars and discoveries of ancient alien artifacts, through battle and betrayal, all the way to a romantic, feel-good ending. The action and flow of ideas almost never let up, but the question lying beneath them is whether an intelligent species can survive in the universe or must inevitably break up into squabbling factions intent on destroying each other. This issue manifests itself in the form of an economic war that threatens Rue, her culture, and the crew of her newly acquired spaceship. Permanence is a splendid example of the current re-working of classic space adventure with modern characterization, science, and style. This is the kind of book that any SF reader should enjoy devouring, page by light-year-spanning page. --Greg L. Johnson
