Quand Paul Sheldon, romancier succs, apprend que l'trange Annie Wilkes l'a sauv de l'pave de sa voiture, il lui en est profondment reconnaissant. Pas pour longtemps. Clou dans son lit, les jambes en miettes, il comprend trs vite que l'lan de l'infirmire n'tait pas exactement altruiste. En le ramenant chez elle, en le soignant, elle s'octroyait son crivain prfr pour elle toute seule, elle avait bien l'intention de le garder pour qu'il crive un nouveau roman, un roman pour elle. Cote que cote, Paul Sheldon doit faire renatre son hrone rcurrente, Misery Chastain, morte la fin de l'pisode prcdente. La vie de Paul en dpend.

Oscillant souvent entre le fantastique et le policier, l'crivain prolifique nous offre avec ce roman une vritable histoire noire. Le suspense est infernal, l'huis clos insupportable, et le lecteur vit, page aprs page, la douleur de l'crivain squestr. L'efficacit de King son paroxysme aussi bien dans le livre que dans la version cinmatographique (Misery). Une terrifiante histoire de folie. Lisa B.
